Kagawa, Gloria

Born in Denver, Colorado, printmaker and multi-media artist Gloria Kagawa now works in her farmstead studio near New Hamburg, Ontario.

Gloria Kagawa is primarily a printmaker, who has developed several methods of creating original prints, and she continues to experiment with new materials and techniques. She is also a skilful painter, experimenting in her rural studio near New Hamburg, Ontario, with variations of oriental-style brushwork which sometimes appear in her mixed media works. Kagawa’s pieces are in many private as well as public collections. She has exhibited widely in this region, across Canada, the United States, Europe and Asia. Her most recent award, in a long list, is Waterloo Region’s Visual Arts Award. The images of Kagawa’s pieces are complex, often including architectural elements, as well as suggestive shadows of plant or human life. Each piece offers understated observations about life and contexts. She completed a B.A. in Fine Arts, and then an Honours B.A. in Fine Arts at the University of Waterloo. She is a quietly private person and artist, whose work and classes are widely appreciated, in high demand. Gloria Kagawa has also been active in supporting the work of other artists, as a juror, a teacher, and, for instance, a-co-founder of the popular Rural Routes Studio Tour in Wilmot Township, which began in 2004.
