Burnett, Virgil

Virgil Burnett, who was born in Kansas, received his undergraduate education at Columbia University, New York and after military service, he earned an MA at Berkley. He also studied in Paris on a Fulbright scholarship.

Burnett is an internationally appreciated book illustrator, writer and sculptor. An effective teacher and generous colleague, he was sadly missed when he retired from the University of Waterloo's Department of Fine Arts.

In Object and Emblem, Burnett’s notes on draftsmanship and on drawing linger in a reader's mind, as much for their unpretentious form as for the truths they discover. It is typical of Virgil Burnett's highly accomplished work that their seriousness is touched with whimsy and with self-deprecation.
