Brandis, Marianne

Marianne Brandis, born in the Netherlands, came to Canada in 1947 with her family. She has a BA and MA from McMaster University. She taught writing and English literature at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute (now Ryerson University) for many years until she turned to writing full-time.

Marianne Brandis writes a memoir of her life with books, tracing her love of reading and writing through stages of her life as well as her development as a writer, exploring the many-layered nuances of oral and silent reading. Brandis wins prizes for young adult historical fiction and also publishes historical novels for adults, as well as non-fiction and memoir. Brandis has created several chapbooks and often collaborates with her brother, Gerard Brender a Brandis on hand-printed books of his fine wood engravings.
